6 Degrees premieres 6 Degrees of Red on June 14-15, 2019 at Archway Gallery in Montrose. Works by Artistic Director Toni Leago Valle, and company members Kate Rash and Tyler Scarberry, 6 Degrees of Red highlights tales of transition in people’s lives; the moving from one destination to another: a location, time, or emotional space; the packing and shedding of contents in a suitcase, in preparation for a new way of life.

Kate Rash explores themes of leaving a life behind and the unknown that follows. “The Severance of This” is an intimate look of splitting open to create space for new possibilities and the pain of detaching from one’s home and community.

“Release/Revelation,” by Tyler Scarberry, references the internalization of depression. Scarbery comments, “The hardest part of managing depression is coming to the realization that there is no magic solution. It is a journey that has to be seen through to the end, and each individual's path is different, though it does not have to be travelled alone.  Allowing others into something very private that feels like a burden is difficult.”

Toni Leago Valle presents “Lifesaver” (2003) and “Roses” (premiere), two works on then and now as a requiem to her parents, who have been married 50 years.  Two opposing dances mirror the dichotomy of being young and feeling alive to the winding down of life and stillness.  “Lifesaver,” a duet for Rash and Scarberry, is a look back to the ideals of first love imbedded in her parents’ marriage.  “Roses” features soloist Bethany Garcia in an analysis of the daily routine of caring for a parent in need. Valle comments, “I am now of a generation at the center of caring for others – sandwiched between elderly parents and a child at home. Often, I feel like time and emotion operate in an isolated bubble: time stands still, emotions are buried under the monotony of relentless tasking and need.  All I can do is breathe and do the next thing.  And the next thing. And the next thing.”
